WHAT THE HECK DOES CABBAGE HAVE TO DO WITH PH?
Today we tried out a TEEN class. A class that could separate the young adults from the kids. A class that could touch on similar topics, be FUN, social, educational and a bit more challenging and daring. We took the Kitchen Chemistry Lesson & amplified it with High School Math, since pH is a logarithmic function we briefly reviewed that and its inverse, exponential functions. We even solved a simple pH word problem together. We went over what pH is, what it stands for, the special properties of red cabbages, a bit of chemistry, and reviewed the scientific method before we began hypothesizing, testing, observing & concluding!!! Teens can be a hard crowd to break into, but I was really happy and welcomed everyones participation, comments, honest feedback & smiles!!! I look forward to see y’all soon… Thanks to Piper, Rachel, Paris, Lillian, Sam, Milo & all the parents for making this happen. Special shout out to Jillian!!! 🙏❤️ #themcnuttyprofessor #funscience #scienceexperimentsforkids #kitchenchemistry #onlineclasses #onlinescience #scienceforkids #chemistryforkids #onlinechemistry #onlinetutor #homeschoolmama #homeschoolactivities #homeschoolscience #homeschoolchemistry #playingwithfood #handsonlearning #cabbagescience #cabbagechemistry

SPAGHETTI TOWERS CLASS: WHAT A FUN CLASS!!! Engineering never tasted so sweet! Lol! What do all towers have in common? What are the tallest buildings in the world? What are the forces acting on towers? Why do these buildings NOT fall down? What is the strongest geometric shape to build angles? Did you know? There is a proposed ‘Tokyo Tower of Babel’? Check out slide 4 for more CRAZY info! We learned all this info, reviewed with a fun Kahoot game, and then applied it to building our own tall tower out of Spaghetti & Marshmallows. Not only did our Tower need to be built in 30 mins, it needed to be as tall as well as strong because it had to balance a raw egg on top (for at least 5 seconds). So…were we up for the challenge? COULD WE DO IT? You’ll just have to scroll through all the photos of smiles & towers to find out…(check out video on slide 10 if you didn’t get answer from the pictures!)😜🤩 Skills Learned: Engineering, Physics, Geometry, Building & Design PS- BIG thanks to all the kids and parents! Today's class was so much fun. We learned about pH: what it is, what it stands for, what's an acid & base, why it's important in daily life, and why CABBAGE? Yes, Cabbage is a great homemade pH indicator because it contains 'anthocyanin' molecules (which gives it the rich purple hue) and changes colors based on the levels of pH. *FYI, pH stands for 'potential Hydrogen'.* Then we reviewed the scientific method and conducted our experiments. Basically, we had to PLAY with food!!! Some of our results might surprise you!!! They did for us, as we 'HYPOTHESIZED' the reactions before each experiment... Thanks to Gianna, Jude, Rain, Brady (and their Mommas) Tina, Tara & Revien!!!! What an awesome group today!!! ❤️ #themcnuttyprofessor #funscience #scienceexperimentsforkids #kitchenchemistry #onlineclasses #onlinescience #scienceforkids #chemistryforkids #onlinechemistry #onlinetutor #homeschoolmama #homeschoolactivities #homeschoolscience #homeschoolchemistry #playingwithfood #handsonlearning #cabbagescience #cabbagechemistry ROBOT ARM CLASS: 🤖💪🖥 2 classes. 21 students ages 6 to 65+. Yes, KIDS come in all AGES!!! 😉 And they hailed from the rising sun to its setting in the USA! Last Friday we had our 1st Robot arm class, followed by the second one on Sunday. The results were amazing!!! However, this class did require 'extensive prep', and during class it did require more work than the norm (BIG shout out to the parents & of course the kids!!!) We also learned about robots, biomimetics, chicken feet, (you heard right!) and a bit about the human arm and our soon to be robot arms…But I think the results, the smiles and a few videos reveal the efforts of their hard work!!! ❤️Check out Jaego, Keira, Kailani & Pyper as they test out their robot hands!!!❤️ #themcnuttyprofessor #onlineteacher #onlinescience #scienceexperiements #robotarmclass #biomimeticsforkids #biomimetics #steam #steamonline #engineeringforkids #engineering #homeschoolmama #homeschoolprojectsforkids #homeschoolprojects #funscienceprojects #handsonlearning #science #robotarm I’ve been searching the internet for various ways to do Pop-Ups, Interactive, 3d handmade cards. I’ve been creating my own templates. BUT I stumbled across this gem of a card template and made it. It's from the original site MMMCrafts, check it out to recreate this card for yourselves too! Offering a Pop-Up / Homemade Card Class soon!!! #themcnuttyprofessor #popupcards #artsandcraftsonline #kidsactivities #homeschoolmama #homeschoolactivities #handmadecards #art #crafts #design #engineering #cardsforkindness #onlinetutor Yesterday we had an awesome Class with Jaxon, Lucy, Jake, Jude, Rain, Gianna & Beckham!!! We learned about: 2 Mathematicians Mary Everest Boole & Pierre Bezier, the Bezier Curve, Parabolas, mandalas, different types of String Art & Curve Stitching origins, the coordinate plane and x & y axes, and How Straight Lines Can Make Curves!!! This can be applied in math, nature, computer code (thanks to David Ng’s website), art & architecture!! Everyone did an awesome job!!! These kids liked it so much, they wanted more templates to create! So they got a heart and snowflake template to continue this as an extension lesson. Also these curve stitchings/string art can be used to create awesome gift cards!!! (I’ve been creating my own templates for years and I love sharing my hobby!!) ❤️Thanks to all the parents and students for allowing me to post as well!❤️ #themcnuttyprofessor #funmath #linesmakecurves #beziercurves #parabola #mathcurves #ideasformathteachers #mathmeetsart #steam #stringart #curvestitching #stringartgift #stringartgifts #mandalas #mathisfun #homeschoolmama #homeschoolactivities #activitiesforkids #math #art #crafts #cardsforkindness ⚡️FLASH CLASS ⚡️ Sunday, October 3rd at 3pm (EST) Let me premise this post by saying everything below is NEW info for me too!!! 🤯 We had kids from N. California, S. California, NC, & NYC. Ages 6-9. It was an awesome class! DID YOU KNOW: We learned about the differences between Pumpkins, Squashes & Gourds. They are all part of the Cucurbitaceae Family (kew-kur-bit-taysee). Pumpkins, Squash, Gourds & Watermelon are ALL part of this family & are all FRUIT!!! And all SQUASHES!!! Yes, fruits are the edible part of plants whose seeds are inside!!! The Cucurbitaceae family can be divided up into Summer & Winter Squashes and there are about 1000 species. They are the largest source of food for the planet and generally grow in tropical to temperate climates. Summer squashes have a soft skin. Winter squashes have a thick skin. Zucchini & Yellow squash are Summer Squashes. Watermelons, Cantelope, Honey Dew & Cucumbers are Summer Squashes too! Acorn, Butternut, Buttercup, Bottle Gourd, Pumpkin & Spaghetti Squash are Winter Squashes. (Some Pumpkins can be Gourds too!) SQUASHES ARE EDIBLE. ALL GOURDS ARE INEDIBLE! Gourds can be used for decoration and for making sturdy bowls. We reviewed with a game of kahoot! And then made our 3d cards!!! AND OF COURSE HAVING FUN THE ENTIRE TIME!!! (Pumpkin Jokes were shared…🤣) Check out the creativity of these crafty cards! ❤️Thanks to the kids and the Moms! ❤️ #themcnuttprofessor #pumpkinpopup #artsandcrafts #artmeetsagriculture #activitiesforkids #homeschoolmama #homeschoolactivities #fall #art #3dart #artclasses #artandscience #fallyall #cardsforkindness AWESOME GROUP CLASS today with Homeschoolers from Virginia, Maryland & North Carolina, Ages 5-14. Today we learned some Math Vocab & what is a quadratic equation, how to read its graph & the shape it makes is like a SMILE or a FROWN. We used Angry Bird’s slingshots to predict parabolic paths to hit targets by playing around with the quadratic equation’s A, B & C parts. Many (EXCITEDLY) presented their screens to share their parabolas!!! We learned where we can find parabolas in real life, the history of Catapults since the Greeks and until WW1 for use as military defense (Catapults & Crossbows, Trebuchet’s and Grenade Launchers). If you wanna go way back and include SLINGSHOTS, we can go Biblical with King David! 😜 We reviewed all this lush info with a game of Kahoot, and finally we made a basic catapult that took 4 steps. With the aim to launch a ping pong ball into a bucket, bowl or trash can by applying the mathematics we learned! AND OF COURSE HAVE FUN!!! EXTENSION: Some wanted to go further and measure the distance their ping pong balls launched, some measured the height, and some measured the time it to from launch to landing. Some decided they wanted to design their own Catapults!!! ALL are great ways to extend the lesson at home and get the kids (& the family) excited about learning!!! Here are some of the results from today and the fun we had!!! THANKS TO ALL THE PARENTS & STUDENTS TODAY!!! Special thanks to @tarynchaloux for all your help! Enjoy the fruits of our labors! ❤️ #onlinemathprojects #funmath #qudraticsandparabolas #activitiesforkids #quadraticsparabolasandcatapultsohmy #quadraticsandcatapults #popsiclecatapults #mathprojects #homeschoolmama #mathengineering #steam #engineering #mathhistorydesignengineering #catapulthistory #mathclassesforkids #mathplay #playtolearn #handsonlearning #math #science #design #algebra2forkiddiestoo
GEOMETRIC ART: String Art 🪡 Jeanine, Elias, Betty & Pyper have all separately learned the String Art Class & the Math behind it, in the Beginner Course. This course briefly reviewed the Coordinate Plane, X & Y axis, the 4 quadrants, the origin point (0,0), and how to understand / create coordinates. Then we learned, if you make a series of lines in a certain pattern, they can create a CURVE!!! WHAT??? 📉⤴️ Jeanine, (a veteran High School Math Teacher) also did the ‘Advanced String Art Class’ where we worked on various shapes rotated around a circle and what shapes these produced, and sewed them with String & produced some String Art Animals, a Giraffe, Jeanine’s fave animal 🦒. (See photos 1-4) 📸 📸 📸 📸 Today, Elias (4th grade, LA, California, USA) persevered, and with patience and fortitude completed this sewing project! Having never before picking up a needle & thread! I’m very impressed with his go at the ‘Beginner String Art Class’ and our Colored Pencils Study to prepare us for the sewing part! Equally impressive is Elias’ prep for the class! It makes interactive classes with a new medium much easier with less anxiety. (See photos 5 & 6) 📸 📸 Betty, a Year 8 student in Oxford, UK, took this course in April, see her String Art Project and Colored Pencil Study Prep. (See photo 7) 📸 Pyper, 1st grade student, and her String Art Sewing Project. Front/Across, Back/Beside😜(See photo 8 & video) 📸 🎥 $10 per person. 5 students signed up already. 5 slots left!!! (See Supply List - photos 9 & 10) 📸 📸 If your interested in try your hand at this Math/Art (drawing & sewing) project, sign up for our Group Beginner String Art Class this Monday, August, 2nd at 11am (EST) by Email! #themcnuttyprofessor #onlinemathclasses #onlinesciencesclasses #scienceexperiments #funmathprojects #homeschoolplanning #homeschoolkids #homeschoolgroups #summerkidsactivities #math #art #geometry #geometricart #beziercurve#stringart #curvestitching #coordinateplane #xandyaxisart #reflectionsrotationstranslationsohmy #reflections #rotations #translations #goodpreparationpreventspoorperformance GEODESIC DOME CLASS:
Yesterday, Keira & Kailani, Lilo, Mango (from Orange County, California), & Pyper (not pictured) got together to learn about Geodesic Domes from around the world. They learned about Epcot at Disney World, Florida, USA, The Eden Project in Cornwall, UK some cool domed tents in Patagonia, and how a Geodesic Dome house can be built in about 7 hours and it’s so strong it can withstand earthquakes, hurricanes & tornados!!! WHAT??? We decided to build one ourselves (in 1 hour! NOT 7! 😆😳) In just 12 simple steps using nothing but straws and pipe cleaners to create 6 pentagons that contain 3d triangles, we did it! Yes, this is possible to do in an hour without pulling your hair out, as long as you’ve done a little prep to the straws!!! We had fun, and I especially loved how Keira and Kailani’s birds 🦜🦜 (Lilo & Mango) would climb on their heads, and sometimes both at the same time. It was so cool to see! And sometimes the birds try kissing them too! I had no idea birds could be so affectionate towards humans!❤️🥰 I learned something too!!!🎓🤪🤩 Thanks to Jennifer (Mom) for sharing these photos, & doing this class and Stick Multiplication!!! Your girls are clever, beautiful, and so much fun! Here’s to more classes together in the future!!! ❤️❤️❤️ #themcnuttyprofessor #geodesicdome #geodesicsphere #geodesicdomehome #buckminsterfuller #mathonline #funmath #professoonaldevelopment #professionaldecelopmentforteachers #ideasformathteachers #ideasforarchitecturestudents #handsongeometry #handsonmath #mathisfun #onlinemathclasses #onlinemathtutoring #trianglespentagonsdomesandspeheresohmy #homeschoolmama #homeschoolevent #summerfun #playgroundlearning #mathideasforteachers #artideasforteachers #engineeringart #steamfun #stemfun4kidz #math #engineering #dome #domes |
