Summer of S.T.E.A.M. - Class 3 of 6: 🚀It's Just Rocket Science (& Bottle Rockets), July 6, 2022🚀

Today was one of the BEST experiments EVER!!! ALL the kids agreed!!! We learned about Rockets, Newton's 3rd Law, 4 forces acting on rockets & aircraft, aerodynamics, chemical reactions, the types of thrust used for rockets, and how to build, prep fuel & launch your rockets safely!!!

Our Rocket Scientists:
Gianna's rocket SOARED into the sky (see her video), Keira & Kailani got great airtime as well! Pyper did awesome too!We even had a super fun Kahoot Review!!! JAMIN killed in Kahoot!!!

Whoever said 'Rocket Science was hard'!!! lol! 🤣

Summer of S.T.E.A.M - Class 2 of 6: 7 Tricks to Impress, June 29, 2022

This class was supposed to be on June 22nd. However, I've been dealing with COVID since around mid June. I'm doing MUCH better this week, but as a result I'm backlogged with posting!

🌞SUMMER OF S.T.E.A.M. CLASS🌞: OPTICAL ILLUSIONS - June 8, 2022
This was the 1st class this Summer. Kids ages 7-13 and we have 3 time zones signed up for this class: West Coast, USA (not pictured), East Coast, USA & Wales, UK.

We learned about MC Escher (my fave artist) and Bridget Riley who both do very different types of illusions in their artwork.

We learned the science behind Optical Illusions and why we get tricked...and we did not 1, not 2, but 3 AWESOME Optical Illusions of our own (the Swirl we started and were to complete after class)!!! I think everyone did an awesome job!!!

After class, some extensions included building the Impossible Triangle or Stairs out of LEGO!!! Riley did an AWESOME job!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

Some parents want to learn with their kids, like Seth, Laura & Grandma Jill! How special is that!!!

STAR WARS: THE FORCE = MA - PAPER AIRPLANE EDITION
VA KIDS GROUP 05.10.22

We first, made whatever paper airplane we could come up with. We saved this for later.

What is THE FORCE??? 'Force' is energy or the exertion you use. And FORCE is F=MA (Force equals Mass times Acceleration) which is Newton's 2nd Law of Motion. In simple terms, the more heavy an object is, it will require more Force to move it, and the smaller the object the less Force required to move it.

Then, we learned about Isaac Newton and his 3 Laws of Motion: 
#1 Inertia (a body at rest wants to stay at rest, and a moving body wants to stay moving unless another force stops it)
#2 F=MA (see above)
#3 Action/Reaction (forces come in pairs if you push an object and it doesn't move the forces are balanced or equal, if you push and the object moves, then the forces are unbalanced therefore MOVEMENT!)

And then we learned how these Laws & the 4 forces of LIFT, GRAVITY, THRUST & DRAG affect our Paper Airplanes. 

We did a KAHOOT REVIEW to test our knowledge of the subject and various Star Wars Characters.

Then we made our LONG DISTANCE FLIERS!!! And launched both aiplanes from the same spot, to see if the long distance plane was really better!

PS- IT WAS WAY BETTER!!! It really went the distance despite looking like it wouldn't!

We started with “Let there be Light ...” Light & Luminaries, What is LIGHT, Color, Speed of Light, Refraction, Reflection, Darkness, Black Holes, Dark Energy & Dark Matter, E=MC(squared), and how the extreme gravitational force of a black hole can cause 'SPAGHETTIFICATION' (yeah, that's a scientific word!)

We did a KAHOOT REVIEW to test our knowledge of the subject and various Star Wars Characters.

POPSICLE CATAPULTS & QUADRATICS - TEEN STEAM - 04.12.22

Awesome group from VA, WV, MD, & WA

This class went deeper into Quadratics than the kids group! And did quite well I might add!

We learned/reviewed some Math Vocab & what is a quadratic equation, how to read its graph & the shape it makes is like a SMILE or a FROWN. 

We used Angry Bird’s slingshots to predict parabolic paths to hit targets by playing around with the quadratic equation’s A, B & C parts. Many (EXCITEDLY) presented their screens to share their parabolas!!!

We learned where we can find parabolas in real life, the history of Catapults since the Greeks and until WW1 for use as military defense (Catapults & Crossbows, Trebuchet’s and Grenade Launchers). If you wanna go way back and include SLINGSHOTS, we can go Biblical with King David! 😜

We reviewed all this lush info with a game of Kahoot, and finally we made a basic catapult that took 4 steps. With the aim to launch a ping pong ball into a bucket, bowl or trash can by applying the mathematics we learned! AND OF COURSE HAVE FUN!!!

Treehouse Class - VA Kids Group - 04.01.22 

A fun class that teaches basic design skills!
​In this new class we researched, designed & built a treehouse, learning how to draw plans and elevations to scale like a real Architect, and then turning it into a 3d structure!!! HOW COOL!!!

First, we looked at crazy cool modern treehouses, these are not the one's we had years ago as kids. Like a Mirror Tree House in the forrest, a human Bird-nest, one's that look like the should be on Endor or part of BB-8's body, ones that look like hobbit's live there, or spherical ones, or Thai ones.

BUT you can't learn about treehouses, without mentioning SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON!!! It was the ORIGINAL treehouse and inspired me as a kid, and then adult who wants to build their own treehouse one day!

We learned how to do basic design skills: floor plans, elevations & 3d scale model (all using grid paper). Using our imaginations to really make cool treehouses, things like a huge fish tank, a fireman's pole exit, video game & theater wall, an indoor hammock, ice cream machine, rope bridges, bean bag chairs, etc. 

We researched, designed & built cool treehouses like Jr Architects! 

Reef surprised us all and built his treehouse out of Lego! It was soooo cool. My photo wasn't the greatest, but I can't tell you how proud I was of him! The creativity was inspiring! Watching Grace, Knysna & Saige working together to create whole connective treehouse was awesome too! Everyone did an awesome job!!!

WV Kids Group - Big Bubbles Class - 04.20.22

🧼💭🛁💬🧋 Last Wednesday, we had beautiful weather the perfect weather for BUBBLES! Everyone was from a different locale 3 from WV, 2 from VA, 1 from TN, 1 from NC, 1 from GA, and 2 from PR!!! 🌎👀

Making our own bubble solution, our own bubble wands. We had kids using molasses, karo syrup, maple syrup, honey, filtered vs unfiltered water. Bubbles need something more than water (high quality water or at least no IRON and minimal hard water as this doesn't allow for bubbles to form), and for bubbles to last longer they need to be thicker, hence different type of sticky/syrupy solutions. BUT it's the ratio that's important!!!

EVERYTIME I teach this class I always get so excited, I've taught it 8 times now! I also love the smiles and even how excited some parents & even grandparents get! ‘Bubbles may be fleeting, but they bring constant amounts of joy!!!’

​MEMORIAL MOON CLASS - VA KIDS GROUP

Today was a very special class, not only was it the largest (22 kids), it was a class to reinforce a very special occasion, the Memorial of Jesus Death. How to know when to celebrate this occasion as specified in 1 Corinthians 11:24? 

To really know when the exact date of the ancient Jewish holiday like Passover, you would have to use their Lunar calendar and convert it over to our Solar calendar. Religious leaders, scientists, and mathematicians all play a part in the modern calendars that we have today. 

To remember something or plan something, in today's world we'd have a calendar (paper or electronic) to remind us. Calendars didn't always exist. So what is their history? What types of calendars do exist? What kind of Calendar do we use in the Western world? Who keeps track of calendars? 

CALENDARS are super complex and have a lengthy (and looney) history. So I tried to compress the highlights, for this class in a fun way. Lunar (moon) & Solar (sun) calendars exist and to understand them, we need to explore the science surrounding them.

Through a few short videos, a drawing activity, and Oreo cookies to help demonstrate the 8 moon phases we began to understand the differences between the lunar & solar cycles. Helping us to understand why we need BOTH calendars in todays world - LUNISOLAR calendars.

FYI - to find the exact day for Easter, you start off similar to Memorial and Passover. The 1st FULL moon after the Spring Equinox (March 20), also called the 'Paschal Moon'. The first Sunday after this FULL moon is Easter. 

We ended with a super fun Kahoot review game! Can't go wrong with Kahoot!
